Tributes have been paid to Max Palmer, the 10-year-old boy who drowned during a school trip to the Lake District.

Margaret Dudley, headteacher at Fleetwood High School, with whom the trip was organised, said he was a "bright young boy" and the school was "very sad".

Deputy head Carolyn Thackway at Max's school - the Shakespeare Primary in the Lancashire town - said everyone would be "devastated" by Max's death.

"It is a tragic loss of life for a boy who had so much going for him," she said.

'Wonderful personality'

Ms Thackway described Max as a "model pupil" who was a joy to teach.

"Max was a very, very popular boy who was very clever," she said.

"All the teachers enjoyed having him in their class. He had lots of friends and also enjoyed sport, especially football.

"Max was an all-rounder with a wonderful personality and a good sense of humour.

"He was one of the lads and extremely bright. He had a thirst for knowledge and was always asking questions."
