Rail crash victim laid to rest
Potters Bar train crash site
Seven people died in the Potters Bar crash
The first of the funerals of the seven victims of the Potters Bar rail crash has taken place.

Chia-Hsin Lin, 30, was laid to rest at a private family ceremony on Wednesday, Hertfordshire police said.

At the ceremony her parents were presented with the Master's degree their daughter was studying for by the vice-chancellor of City University, London at the funeral in Watford.

Tony Blair has given his backing to Transport Secretary Stephen Byers following Friday's crash which killed seven and injured more than 40.

The prime minister said Mr Byers had got all of the big strategic decisions on the railways right and it was too early to speculate on the cause of the tragedy.

Crash investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances of the accident, after a Health and Safety Executive (HSE) interim report said four nuts on the set of points involved were not in position.

The train carriage was moved from the station to the rail investigation unit at Crewe on Wednesday.

The points have been taken to a laboratory in Buxton.

The HSE wants to establish why the nuts were missing
Speaking on BBC 2's Newsnight programme Mr Blair backed the transport secretary's decisions to force Railtrack into administration and establish the Strategic Rail Authority (SRA).

He said: "In respect of these big decisions I think he has made the right ones."

But he admitted: "I'm not sitting here telling you the rail network is as it should be. It is not."

Questioned over whether Mr Byers would still be in his job at the next election Tony Blair said he never discussed cabinet reshuffles.

The comments prompted Tory chairman David Davis to say Mr Byers had been hung "out to dry".

Inspection

On Tuesday the HSE said missing rail nuts in a set of points probably caused the derailment.

Rail maintenance contractor Jarvis said the nuts were found detached and screwed back in place during a routine check on 1 May.

A further visual check on 9 May apparently found nothing wrong, but the HSE said the nuts were off again the next day, causing the accident.

All four nuts have now been taken away for inspection.
