Festival 'super-fence' erected
Steel fencing girders
The steel fence is designed to keep out gatecrashers
Work has begun on Glastonbury Festival's 1m 'super-fence', which must keep out gatecrashers if the event is to continue.

But people who live near the festival site in Somerset are worried how those who are kept out may react.

Pilton resident, Anne Goode, said: "Very little attention has been given to what goes on outside.

"There could well be many thousands of frustrated and angry people milling around these lanes."

Villagers fear the reaction of gatecrashers

Avon and Somerset Police say they are aware of the potential problems.

But their biggest concern is to prevent the overcrowding which threatened safety in June 2000, when about 100,000 people got into the site without paying.

Police said it was "dangerously unsafe" and last year's event was cancelled.

Organiser Michael Eavis warned that if security fails this summer, it will be the end of the festival.

He has enlisted live music company, the Mean Fiddler, to take over operational control.

The 12-foot super-fence will stretch seven kilometres around the perimeter of Worthy Farm.

Security chief, Bill Stuart, is confident it will keep out gatecrashers.

"It's definitely going to do it, without a shadow of a doubt," he said.

"We're determined to keep people out.

"And the message is 'if you don't have a ticket, then please don't come'."
