Prince Charles said the demolition of the infamous Bull Ring shopping centre and investment in the historic Jewellery Quarter would remind people of the city's civic heritage. He was speaking on a visit to launch plans for a new community project in the UK's second city. Speaking at the Gas Hall exhibition gallery on Monday, Charles was "thrilled" the Kitts Green and Shard End districts will house the Prince of Wales' Community Building.
He told civic dignitaries and pupils from schools across the city: "I think Birmingham is beginning to rediscover its architectural riches and heritage and the value of quality urban space in places like the Jewellery Quarter. "I remember I managed to get the Duchy of Cornwall to invest in the Jewellery Quarter 10 years ago when no-one else wanted to know, so I am glad to see it has begun to have its day again. "Perhaps the demolition of things like the Bull Ring reminds people of what used to be there." The demolition of the Bull Ring to make way for a new shopping centre is part of a multi-million investment programme in Birmingham. It includes the Mailbox complex, which houses top designer shops and luxury apartments, and the Brindley Place canal-side network of bars and restaurants. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
