The costume comes complete with Lara's twin Smith and Wesson automatic replica pistols and leather holsters, her round sunglasses and a certificate of authenticity.

It was worn by Ms McAndrew in 1998 to 1999 on promotional tours to places as far-flung as the Great Wall of China, the deserts of Nevada and the tombs of Egypt.

However, Lara underwent a revamp last month, unveiled by new model Jill de Jong, making the original look even more collectable.

Lara's worldwide fame was boosted last year by the release of a movie based on the original computer games, starring Angelina Jolie.

But the original was developed in 1995 at the Core Design studio.

Mr Heath-Smith added: "We hope it will raise a substantial amount of money for a very worthwhile cause."

Rose Nelson, the regional fundraising manager for Unicef UK, said the money would go towards providing education for the 130 million children worldwide denied schooling - most of them girls.

"Education opens an infinite number of doors for children and it is our hope that all children everywhere can receive their right to a basic education."

Fans now have 10 days to place their bids for the outfit.
