Soldiers thank rescue dog

A group of soldiers caught in an avalanche in Scotland are being reunited with the pet dog which helped rescue them.

The seven soldiers from 662 Squadron Three Regiment Army Air Corps were on a training expedition in the Cairngorms when they were swept down the slope by the avalanche.

Springer spaniel Breagh, owned by the expedition's leader Lieutenant Jamie Murray, helped find some of them in the snow.

The soldiers said they were glad to get back safely to their base at Wattisham Airfield in Suffolk.

Adventurous training

"Luckily none of us had any serious injuries," said Lieutenant Murray.

"One soldier is still on crutches, but otherwise we're all back at work."

The men were on an adventurous training exercise accompanied by Breagh at Coire an Lochain near Aviemore on 16 April.

They were swept hundreds of feet down the mountainside by the avalanche.

At one point, there were fears the soldiers could be hit by a large slab of snow left hanging over them.

Alarm raised

Lieutenant Murray was unhurt and raised the alarm on a mobile phone.

Breagh sniffed out some of the remaining six soldiers who were buried in the snow.

Four of the men were kept in hospital overnight after the accident.

As well as thanking Breagh, the soldiers plan to show their gratitude to the mountain rescue teams that helped them back to safety.

Lieutenant Murray said: "As our way of saying thank you, we're planning a special fundraising event in the near future with the proceeds going to the mountain rescue services involved."
