| Tuesday, 23 April, 2002, 11:07 GMT 12:07 UK Nappy scheme helps parents go green ![]() Disposable nappies take 500 years to rot Parents in Oxfordshire are being offered 30 to stop using disposable nappies and to switch to nappies which can be washed. About 100,000 disposable nappies are binned every day in the county, a figure which accounts for 5% of all rubbish produced by householders. Across the UK, eight million nappies are thrown away daily. Parents can register with a local nappy-laundering service and will either get money off the use of the laundry service or money back on the purchase of the nappy's waterproof covering.
The Oxfordshire scheme is one of many taking place during Real Nappy week, which highlights the environmental damage caused by disposable nappies. Councillor Anne Purse, the executive member for Strategic Planning and Waste Management said: "Most people think that washable nappies means the old style terry towelling plus safety pin ones. "However the technology has changed so quickly that they are virtually identical to disposable nappies - just cheaper and better for your children and the environment." Disposable nappies cause massive environmental problems, according to campaigners. Real Nappy Week is run by the Women's Environmental Network (WEN), the Real Nappy Association and the National Association of Nappy Services to highlight how disposable nappies injure the environment. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
