Family complain over hospital inquiry

A health watchdog is looking into care at the hospital
The family of a woman who died at a Hampshire hospital have made a formal complaint about the way her death was investigated.

Alice Wilkie's death in 1998 is one of nine at Gosport War Memorial Hospital investigated by Hampshire police.

Earlier this year the force said there were no grounds for a criminal prosecution.

But the family of Mrs Wilkie say they are angry over the way they claim police handled the investigation.

Incomplete inquiry

Speaking about her mother's hospital treatment, Mrs Wilkie's daughter Marilyn Jackson, said: "She might have had a few more months, she might have had a year, we don't know that.

"I think she could have had a little bit more care and been better looked after if she'd been somewhere else."

The family point out that Hampshire Police did not interview relatives and claim the investigation was incomplete.

But following their investigations, detectives passed a file to the Commission for Health Improvement (CHI).

Its findings into the quality of health care provided to older people at the hospital will be published in June.

The CHI was set up to monitor the quality of patient care in England and Wales which includes carrying out investigations into areas of clinical concern.

A spokeswoman for Hampshire police said the complaint by Mrs Wilkie's family would be looked into.
