A prestigious livestock show has been cancelled for the second year in a row because of foot-and-mouth disease.

Organisers of the National Rare Breeds' Show and Sale, held at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire, said staging the event would be too difficult under rules introduced after last year's outbreak.

A temporary licensing system means livestock markets and agricultural shows have to operate under strict bio-security rules.

The show and sale normally takes place on the first weekend in September and attracts up to 8,000 people.

Richard Lutwyuche, from the Rare Breeds Survival Trust, said: "For two days of the year we effectively turn the show ground into a market.

"That was perfectly feasible before the regulations came into being but these demands are onerous and to turn a show ground into a market is just impossible."
