| Tuesday, 16 April, 2002, 13:32 GMT 14:32 UK Falklands veterans to reunite ![]() The war's 20th anniversary is being commemorated Twenty years after the first British ship to be sunk in action since World War II went down - with the loss of 20 lives - a member of her crew is planning a reunion. An exocet missile slammed into HMS Sheffield during the Falklands War in 1982. The men who died were engulfed in a fire caused by the missile's fuel. Although many of the crew subsequently lost contact with one another, Bristol-based Lieutenant Geoff Naldrett is helping to get them back together.
Lt Naldrett, who lives with his wife Lindsay in Bristol, is trying to track down others living in the south west who served with him. "Twenty years is such a landmark time and it seems a good point for everyone to get together and to find out what they're doing in their lives now. "A few of us are still in the service but really it's just to make contact again after such a long time." Mrs Naldrett can still remember the terrible moment when news came through of the missile strike. 'Terrific relief' "The first news said that the ops room had been hit and I knew that was where Geoff was working. "Then I had a phone call from a friend who said she had just heard his name on a survivors' list and the official news came through to me about two hours later. "It was a terrific relief, although then you suddenly realise that they were still in the war zone." Many of the crew left the service afterwards, but Lt Naldrett hopes their shared experience will draw them back together, 20 years on. * If you served on HMS Sheffield and want to join the reunion on 4 May, details can be obtained from 02392-710406. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
