 | | Thursday, 11 April, 2002, 14:54 GMT 15:54 UK Island bus company accepts Euro  Buses will accept the Euro but change will be in sterling A bus company on the Isle of Wight has decided to accept Euro coins and notes from passengers. Southern Vectis will accept the new currency at each of its 1,000 bus stops on the island. The company hopes the move will be popular with foreign students and tourists. Drivers will accept the Euro but will give change in sterling.
Managing director, Alan White, said: "Our drivers have been familiarised in readiness for the Euro launch. "We are expecting foreign visitors to welcome this initiative which is a 'first' in the UK." Tourism officials on the island have welcomed the scheme. A spokesperson from the Isle of Wight Tourist Office said: "With 2.7 million visitors a year, 73,000 of which are from European countries, this is great news for the island's tourism. "It should help make visiting the Isle of Wight even more accessible and hassle-free".
