Lost dolphin delights swimmers
The dolphin tends to come inshore in the early evening
Swimmers gather to greet the Chesil Cove dolphin
A dolphin which has been separated from its fellow creatures is seeking the company of people at a Dorset beach.

The bottlenose dolphin has been swimming and frolicking with holidaymakers and surfers at Chesil Cove.

Wildlife groups have expressed concern for the mammal's well-being because it keeps being struck by boat propellers.

But scores of people are taking advantage of a rare opportunity to get within touching distance.

Conservationists are asking people to stay away from the dolphin despite the fact that he has proved friendly.

There is concern about the mental state of the animal which appears to be craving company.

Tourist attraction

Bottlenose dolphins stay together in packs so it is rare to see one alone.

Peter Tinsley from the Dorset Wildlife Trust said: "There's something odd about it definitely.

"It would normally be with other dolphins and it seems to be constantly, almost obsessively, seeking contact with people and boats.

"This is inevitably going to lead to problems for the dolphin, especially as he seems to be getting very close to boat propellers."

Sometimes people frighten him off but he comes back 10 to 15 minutes later

Sandy Ferguson
There are marks on the dolphin's head and body from such close encounters with boats.

He is thought to have lost his fellow dolphins in French waters and does not know how to return.

The unscheduled visit has proved to be a major attraction at Chesil Cove.

Local boy Sandy Ferguson said: "In the last few days there's been hundreds of people here.

"Sometimes they frighten him off but he comes back 10 to 15 minutes later."

Although the close company of single dolphins remains rare, similar contact with the mammals has been made near the Isle of Man and off the coast of Ireland.
