Surrey Police incapacitated the man
A man who allegedly threatened police officers with a Samurai sword and handgun has been shot with a plastic bullet.

The baton round was fired in the early hours of Sunday in Portsmouth Road, Milford, near Godalming, Surrey.

As a result of the man threatening the officers, a single baton round was discharged to incapitate him

Surrey Police
An officer shot one round to incapacitate the man, who is under arrest at Royal Surrey County Hospital where he is being treated for injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

The Police Complaints Authority will investigate the baton-firing incident.

A police spokesman said: "Following reports of a man brandishing a Samurai sword and a handgun in the street, officers were called to the area.

"As a result of the man threatening the officers, a single baton round was discharged to incapitate him.

Less lethal option

"He was then disarmed, restrained and arrested for making threats to kill."

Baton guns were first introduced in Northern Ireland in the early seventies at the height of sectarian violence.

The weapons were given ministerial approval for use by police forces in England and Wales as a less lethal option than live ammunition.
