Police pursuit inquiry after crash death
Police patrol car
The patrol car lost sight of the Nova before the crash
A 20-year-old driver has died after crashing his car while being followed by a police patrol car in Greater Manchester.

The man was at the wheel of a red Vauxhall Nova, which collided with a pelican crossing in Lees Road in Oldham.

Greater Manchester Police say a patrol car was following the Nova, but had lost sight of it by the time the crash happened.

The independent Police Complaints Authority has been asked to supervise an investigation into the crash.

The motorist died in Royal Oldham Hospital

The accident took place at about 0130 BST on Sunday.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said a marked police patrol car had been driving along Lees Road when it was overtaken by the Nova travelling at high speed.

They said: "The driver of the police car began to follow the Nova, but he very quickly lost sight of it.

"When he came round a bend, he saw the scene of the accident."

Investigation underway

The officer gave first aid at the scene.

An ambulance took the man to the Royal Oldham Hospital, where he died of his injuries around two hours later.

He is believed to be from the Manchester area.

The police spokesman said: "An investigation has been launched which will now be referred to the Police Complaints Authority for their supervision."
