| Thursday, 4 April, 2002, 09:36 GMT 10:36 UK Refugee doctors trained for NHS ![]() The NHS has a shortage of qualified doctors A London university is planning to train refugee doctors to fill vacancies in the NHS. Queen Mary College, part of the University of London, is starting a scheme to prepare doctors from other countries to work in the UK. The Refugee Council says there are more than 200 refugee doctors in London. The 300,000 programme will enable about 30 refugee doctors to be trained every year.
At present qualified non-EU doctors must pass a General Medical Council's English language examination, and the Professional and Linguistics Board Examination. But because of financial difficulties many refugees are unable to take these exams. Queen Mary's programme will give doctors access to books and facilities, assistance with communication skills and help with clinical placements. Deng Yai, employment and training policy advisor at the Refugee Council, said: "This valuable initiative will begin to make use of the untapped potential refugee doctors represent to the NHS." The Refugee Council and the British Medical Association have 500 registered refugee doctors of which over half are based in London. The majority are from Iraq, Afghanistan and Iran. It is believed the register represents only a small fraction of the total numbers of refugee doctors in the UK. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
