Painting of soccer legend recovered
Manchester United Old Trafford
The painting was stolen from the Old Trafford ground
A stolen painting worth around 100,000 of Manchester United legend Denis Law has been found outside a chip shop.

Police say the portrait, which was taken from the VIP lounge of the club's Old Trafford ground on 31 March, was recovered without its frame but otherwise undamaged.

The 35in by 30in painting shows Aberdeen-born Law with his arm in the air after scoring one of his 171 goals for United between 1962 and 1973.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: "The painting was found by the owner of the Manchester United supporters' chip shop in Chester Road on 1 April."

The oil painting is by Salford-born artist Harold Riley.

The police spokesman said: "The painting was part of a collection in the VIP lounge of Old Trafford.

Denis Law moved to England as a 16-year-old when he was signed by Huddersfield Town before moving to Manchester City, Italian side Torino and then to Manchester United where he became one of the greats.

Mr Riley, 67, has painted other famous people including former American president Gerald Ford, Nelson Mandela, the Duke of Edinburgh and golfer Jack Nicklaus.
