| Thursday, 28 March, 2002, 16:13 GMT Airport staff's Easter strike ![]() 164,000 people passed through the airport last Easter Hundreds of security staff at one of the country's busiest airports are to start a four-day strike which their union claims will cause disruption for thousands of holidaymakers. An estimated 160,000 people will be using Manchester Airport over the Easter weekend as the Transport and General Workers' Union (TGWU) moves into its eighth week of industrial action. The union said last weekend's strike caused hundreds of delays, but the airport has said the disruption was due to air traffic control problems and not the security dispute. More than 500 security staff will stage this weekend's walk-out, starting at midnight tonight and finishing at midnight on Easter Monday.
TGWU regional secretary Dave McCall said: "We apologise in advance for the inevitable delays that the travelling public will experience. "However, the future of an effective, properly trained, valued and rewarded security service remains the main issue. Contingency plans "We reject and continue to reject attempts by Manchester Airport to have a cut-priced service based on burger bar rates of pay." A Manchester Airport spokeswoman dismissed claims that the strike would cause delays, saying: "It will be business as usual. "Contingency plans are in place and extra security staff drafted in. "Security at the airport will not be compromised." | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
