| Wednesday, 27 March, 2002, 12:47 GMT Record price for Pele's shirt ![]() Pele scored in the 4-1 win over Italy A football shirt worn by Pele when he won the World Cup in 1970 has fetched a record 157,750 at auction. The yellow number 10 Brazil shirt smashed the previous record for a football shirt which was 91,750 for Sir Geoff Hurst's shirt worn in the 1966 World Cup Final. London auction house Christie's had predicted a price of about 50,000 for the shirt but that was more than tripled by an anonymous telephone bidder. An England World Cup winner's medal given to Ray Wilson sold for 80,750. Shirt swapping Footballing legend Pele wore the record shirt as he scored the opening goal in Brazil's famous 4-1 win over Italy in Mexico.
Rik Pike, Christie's spokesman, said: "This has broken the world record for a shirt by a long way and we are delighted. "Pele is a globally-recognised name, universally recognised as the greatest footballer of the 20th Century." The shirt worn by Sir Geoff when he scored a hat-trick for England in 1966 was bought in September 2000. Lost and found A wide range of football memorabilia was on offer at the auction on Wednesday. Ray Wilson's World Cup medal, won after England's 4-2 defeat of West Germany at Wembley, fetched what was expected.
The former defender had said before the sale he decided to sell the medal to provide financially for his family. Another of the 277 lots was an early European club medal which was thought lost until recently. The 1963 Uefa Cup winner's medal given to Tottenham Hotspurs captain Danny Blanchflower was found in a jug which had been bought for 25. That was sold for 10,575 to Spurs fan Jamie Lebetkin, 37, from north London. Other lots included international caps, a Victorian era Division One medal, shirts, signed footballs and programmes. | See also: Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
