'Spider woman' ends up with allergy
Tarantula
Tarantulas can flick their hairs in self-defence
A zookeeper has been forced to stop handling her favourite tarantulas after becoming allergic to their hairs.

Red-kneed tarantulas are known to flick bristles from their rears and hind legs to fend off potential attackers.

Now Julia Morris, an education assistant at Dudley Zoo in the West Midlands, can no longer go near the creatures - even though her job involved handling them.

She said: "I became over-sensitive to the hair on the spiders because I used to handle the red-kneed tarantula a lot.

In extreme cases the windpipe can close

"It was a particular favourite of mine.

"I can't handle them any more for health and safety reasons, because they flick their hair if they are distressed or irritated.

"If I was to inhale the fur it could cause my windpipe to swell up and it could be very dangerous."

Zoo insect expert Adrian Durkin told BBC Radio WM: "It is possible to be allergic to the spider fur.

"In fact they intend that you should be allergic to them - it's one of the spider's defence mechanisms."

He said handling such spiders causes them to discharge the minute hairs which cause intense irritation especially on sensitive areas of the skin.

Mr Durkin said: "Inevitably when you handle a spider like this, a few of its hairs are going to come out on your hands.

"If you put your hands anywhere near your face this will bring on the same allergic reaction."

In extreme cases, the hairs can cause the windpipe to swell dangerously.
