| Tuesday, 26 March, 2002, 13:38 GMT Unruly teenage brothers 'want jobs' ![]() Robert (left) and Ben White were linked with shoplifting Two teenage brothers who attracted national attention after being banned from a town centre say they want to get proper jobs. Ben White, 17, and his brother Robert, 15, from Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, were speaking on an edition of the BBC Kilroy talk show. The brothers said their parents had tried to punish them but said it "just did not work". Last week magistrates extended Anti-Social Behaviour Orders (Asbo) banning the brothers from several parts of the town, after the district council described how police had received 70 complaints about their behaviour.
The younger brother Robert - who said he had been shoplifting, fighting and stealing cars since the age of 12 because he was "bored" - told the programme that he was "determined to change". "I have to go and live with my cousins, so that will change me, hopefully," he said. Robert, who said he wanted to be a lorry driver, said he was no longer at school because he had struggled with the work. "I just could not get on with the work - I did not like doing it. I didn't like people telling me what to do." 'Hanging around' Asked if his father had tried to stop him from getting into trouble, Robert said: "He tried, but every kid has got their own mind, haven't they?" When questioned about the best advice to keep youths out of trouble, he said: "Stop hanging around with gangs. But everywhere you go there is always a gang, isn't there?" The White brothers were among the youngest boys in the country to be subject to an Asbo when the orders were first imposed on them two years ago. 'Decent job' Ben told the Kilroy programme he had been involved in shoplifting, theft and vandalism, but said there was "nothing to do" in Weston and claimed he was "no good" at anything. He wanted to earn a living, get married and have children, he said - and complained that no one would give him a job because of his reputation. "I want a decent job and everything I want in life," he said. "I want to be a bricklayer. But I went on the course and because of my name they said get off the course - no one would give me a chance." | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
