| Monday, 18 March, 2002, 18:53 GMT Blunkett 'sorry' over riot-hit centre ![]() Fire caused about 44m of damage to centre Home Secretary David Blunkett has "apologised" to residents for past mistakes in the consultation over an asylum centre which was partially destroyed during a riot. Residents living near Yarl's Wood Detention Centre, near Bedford, questioned Mr Blunkett over their concerns during his visit to the site to the site on Monday. Mr Blunkett also talked to staff, Group 4 - which runs the centre - and representatives of the Bedfordshire Police Authority. Residents' leader Margaret Turner welcomed the visit and the opportunity to put the views of local people to the home secretary.
"The meeting went very well. Mr Blunkett met with us for 45 minutes and took questions," she told BBC News Online. "He has said that there will be consultation about the rebuilding of the site and he apologised to residents who have felt that a lot of assurances given were not acted on. "For example we were told that the site would be far more secure than it was." She was disappointed that he would not look at reducing the size of the centre, which when rebuilt can hold 900 asylum-seekers. Mr Blunkett was also asked about whether local residents would have to foot the bill for the refit. Positive meeting The centre's insurers are using a 19th century law to argue the police authority should pay the 44m clear-up and repair bill. Mr Blunkett said he could not comment on the issue because of possible legal action. Mrs Turner, who chairs the Yarl's Wood Liason Committe, said: "It was a positive meeting. I feel reassured that they know that they have got to get it right this time."
Following the meeting, Mr Blunkett said: "I have listened to the views and concerns of local residents and staff who work at the centre. "I have reassured them that the government is committed to taking the necessary action to prevent deplorable incidents like this happening again. "This was a dreadful event and I know my department must now work with the local community to restore confidence in our arrangements. "I hope my visit here today has helped that process. I am grateful for the honest and productive discussion that I have had this afternoon." Rioting broke out late on 14 February and two accommodation blocks were destroyed by fire. A number of people who were detained at the centre are still missing after disappearing during the riots. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
