'Anarchy' police chief back at helm
Commander Brian Paddick
Brian Paddick was criticised for his use of language
The outspoken police chief who said he found anarchism "appealing"is back on the job helping to co-ordinate raids on two crack dens, after a holiday.

Commander Brian Paddick returned to frontline policing just hours after his superiors had expressed concern over the language he used in relation to anarchy and drugs.

He gave a briefing to 50 officers before they embarked on an operation against dealers on two estates in Brixton, south London.

Earlier Commander Paddick, 43, had been grilled by Commissioner Sir John Stevens and Assistant Commissioner Mike Todd over his comments on the www.urban75.com website.

The bottom line is, screw the dealers, help the addicts

They supported his use of the internet to talk to local people and there was no question of him having breached any disciplinary codes.

However he was rebuked for some of the language he used, which it was felt, could have undermined his authority.

As well as saying he found the concept of anarchism appealing he made several comments on drugs.

Successful operation

In one discussion he said: "What do I really think ... we need to take the criminality out of it by legalisation and strict control.

"The bottom line is, screw the dealers, help the addicts."

Monday night's operation against dealers was deemed a significant success.

A total of 70 "rocks" of crack cocaine worth thousands of pounds and weapons including a machete, lump hammer and lock knife were seized and seven people were arrested.
