| Monday, 11 March, 2002, 10:01 GMT New policy to tackle London's drug crime ![]() The meeting will initiate a three-year drugs policy Policies to deal with drug crime in London were being renewed on Monday. The Metropolitan Police and Greater London Authority were meeting to develop a new enforcement and partnership drugs policy. A consultation exercise will be carried out with other agencies, inviting ideas and feedback on how to deal with the major problems caused by drugs like crack cocaine. A recent survey conducted by the Home Office revealed that up to 61% of people in London have taken drugs that include heroin.
Before the meeting Mayor Ken Livingstone said: "Heroin and crack cocaine are responsible for the destruction of far too many lives in London. "I am committed to bringing all relevant agencies together to focus on how we can reduce the harm caused by drugs." The meeting, hosted by the Met's deputy assistant commissioner Michael Fuller, was designed to initiate policies and strategies for the next three years. "The meeting will invite views and contributions from key players working in the drugs field and others who are working towards making London a safer place," said Mr Fuller. The Metropolitan Police Authority (MPA) said the drugs issue needs to be tackled with the "greatest urgency". Toby Harris, MPA chairman, said: "Drug abuse is widespread throughout our communities, and drug-fuelled gun crime has increased alarmingly." A consultation document will be drawn up following the meeting, which will be submitted to the MPA for final approval. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
