Before the meeting Mayor Ken Livingstone said: "Heroin and crack cocaine are responsible for the destruction of far too many lives in London.

"I am committed to bringing all relevant agencies together to focus on how we can reduce the harm caused by drugs."

The meeting, hosted by the Met's deputy assistant commissioner Michael Fuller, was designed to initiate policies and strategies for the next three years.

"The meeting will invite views and contributions from key players working in the drugs field and others who are working towards making London a safer place," said Mr Fuller.

The Metropolitan Police Authority (MPA) said the drugs issue needs to be tackled with the "greatest urgency".

A consultation document will be drawn up following the meeting, which will be submitted to the MPA for final approval.
