Gun scare delays train
First Great Western train
The train was delayed for more than two hours
A train was searched by armed police after a passenger reported she had seen a man with a gun.

Passengers on the train in Devon were delayed for more than two hours on Sunday.

Police were alerted at about 1350 GMT by the woman using a mobile phone.

As the train pulled into Newton Abbot station, passengers were told it was being delayed because of technical difficulties.

Armed officers were deployed because of the concern firearms might be used

Inspector Ken Turner, Devon and Cornwall police
The incident happened on board the First Great Western 1015 GMT service from Paddington to Penzance.

Inspector Ken Turner, of Devon and Cornwall police, told BBC News Online said the woman thought she had seen the handle of a pistol.

He said: "Armed officers were deployed because of the concern that firearms might be used.

"After they boarded the train, the man in question was located and searched, but no weapon was located.

"Officers then thoroughly searched the carriage, but nothing was found.

"After questioning the man, the officers allowed him to continue on his way."

The train was finally allowed to leave the station just before 1600 GMT.

A spokesman for Great Western Trains said trains coming from Exeter and Cornwall were delayed because of the incident.

He said: "Although it is not clear whether passengers will be entitled to compensation, the case will be examined on Monday and a decision made."
