D-Day village marks 400 years
The beach at Torcross, Devon
The village's beach resembles the Normandy coast
A village that was evacuated to make way for D-Day landings rehearsals is set to celebrate its 400-year history.

An exhibition will be staged later this month, tracing the history of Torcross in Devon.

The earliest document on show dates back to 1602, while photographs of the evacuation are a central feature.

Up to 3,000 village residents were given less than a month to leave during World War II, to make way for Exercise Tiger.

It was important not to lose this wonderful wealth of history

Robin Rose Price
The village was one of five to be evacuated for the preparations because the local beaches resembled those in Normandy.

Photographs of the period include shots of when the village was turned into a "fortress" by coils of military barbed wire.

Up to 250 items are on show in Torcross chapel from 28 March to 8 April.

The exhibition has been co-ordinated by bed and breakfast owner Robin Rose-Price, with the help of many local people over the last four months.

Earliest painting

The 400-year-old document carries details about how a representative of the new village spoke at a manorial court on 29 March, 1602.

The exhibition will also show the earliest painting of the village, done in 1793 by a clergyman.

Many photographs will show ladies in Victorian dress taking the air, as well as the first stagecoach in 1858.

Mr Rose Price said: "I felt it was important not to lose this wonderful wealth of history, and the exhibition was a way for the villagers to share in that history."
