 | | Thursday, 28 February, 2002, 11:46 GMT Island rocks to new beat  The Charlatans will headline the "Island Rock" festival Top music acts have been lined up to appear at the first rock festival to be held on the Isle of Wight for more than 30 years. In the late 1960s the island attracted legendary acts such as Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, The Who and The Doors for a series of festivals which remain in music folklore. This year's revival coincides with the Queen's Golden Jubilee and organisers are hoping it will once again establish the Isle of Wight on the festival calender. Headliners at the all-day "Island Rock" concert on 3 June will be rock band The Charlatans, supported by Ash, Starsailor, The Coral and The Bees. 'Young Jubilee' Producer John Giddings, from Solo promotions, said: "We are re-inventing the Isle of Wight festival for the 21st Century with modern rock bands. "I was there before and I think it is brilliant to be involved now. "The Isle of Wight is known world-wide. It is still talked about.
John Lennon and Yoko Ono were among the crowd at the original concert in 1968. Bob Dylan played in 1969 and Jimi Hendrix in 1970, just a month before his death in London. Complaints from locals after that final concert, which is said to have attracted more than 500,000 revellers, put a stop to any more festivals. Organisers hope to attract 25,000 people to the island on the day of another pop concert in London to celebrate the Queen's Jubilee. Mr Giddings said: "We are the alternative for young people. We are the young Jubilee." Island Rock, from 1400 until 1030 GMT at Seaclose Park, Newport, begins two weeks of music concerts on the Isle of Wight.
