| Wednesday, 27 February, 2002, 13:43 GMT Teacher saw girl washed away ![]() Hannah Black and Rochelle Cauvet (right) were killed A teacher has described how she saw one her pupils being carried away in a fast-flowing stream during an advernture trip. Liz Schofield, 25, was one of two teachers who led a group of 15 children from Royds School, at Oulton, near Leeds, on a river walk in Stainforth Beck, North Yorkshire. On 10 October 2000 Hannah Black, 13, and Rochelle Cauvet, 14 died after being swept away. Miss Schofield broke down in tears as she tried to give evidence at the inquest into the girls' deaths. She told the jury: "She [Rochelle] was just in front of me. I certainly saw her face as she came to my left.
"I just had to do something so I turned round and followed her down." The maths teacher had been at the back of the group which was wading at the edge of the beck, when she was alerted by shouts from the children. Miss Schofield said the girl was facing in the direction of the flow, with her feet in front of her. The two girls' parents were watching from a few feet away as Miss Schofield broke down. Proceedings at Harrogate Magistrates Court had to be adjourned while the teacher composed herself. On Tuesday, the other teacher on the trip, Andy Miller, also wept as he recalled the incident.
