Wife's kidney saves husband's life
Operating theatre
The couple underwent a "live" transplant
A man has described how his wife had given him the "gift of life" after giving him one of her kidneys.

Gurd Ubhi and his wife Kam, from Birmingham, underwent a "live" transplant in which one of her kidneys was donated to her husband.

The businessman, who has two children, first began to suffer from kidney failure 15 years ago.

Mr Ubhi, 39, said: "There is no better gift than the gift of life, which is what she gave me."

We are best friends, we do everything together

A transplant became the only option for the Mr Ubhi, who runs an electronics and security firm, once he started to develop high blood pressure and his kidneys began to deteriorate.

Mr Ubhi said doctors urged him to appeal for a donor within his family before suggesting the transplant between husband and wife.

Tests were carried out to ensure their blood groups and tissues were compatible before the couple underwent the operation at the city's Queen Elizabeth Hospital a month ago.

Mr Ubhi said: "I was lucky because I hadn't been on dialysis and was fairly fit before the operation, so my chances of survival were improved.

'Be happy'

"But the whole experience has made me realise just how important being on the donor register is.

"You can make such a difference to someone's life and I would urge anyone who has not registered to do so.

"My wife has effectively saved two lives because I am not on the list awaiting a donor, so a kidney could go to someone else."

Mrs Ubhi said: "We are best friends, we do everything together. This has confirmed everything we have always thought - live life to the max, do everything you can and be happy."
