Three-legged dog on beat
Snoopy
Snoopy had a leg amputated at Christmas
Snoopy the police dog is continuing his fight against drug-dealing criminals despite only having three legs.

The handicapped hound is at the forefront of Wiltshire Constabulary's war on crime although he had a rear leg amputated at Christmas.

The seven-year-old English springer spaniel is still highly active in the hunt for drugs, firearms and ammunition and is back on full police duties following his operation two months ago.

Originally a gift from police in Wales, Snoopy has been active in the dog section since 1998 and has been instrumental in collaring a number of criminals.

Sniffing out trouble

His handler, PC Bill Hand, said the dog developed arthritis in a back leg towards the end of last year following an earlier injury which had become infected.

Following consultations with a vet the decision was taken to amputate the leg as it was feared the infection could spread to the rest of his body and he would be retired from the force.

He's a great asset, although a little unusual looking now

Police spokesman
However, after a short period of recuperation for Snoopy he's now back with PC Hand in Devizes, Wiltshire, and continuing to sniff out trouble.

PC Hand said: "Snoopy is a real pro-active search dog, he has had many successes and the loss of his leg appears to have had no real effect on him.

"It's just like he's had his toes clipped."

Snoopy is due for retirement, to live with his handler and family, as soon as a replacement puppy has been trained for the job.

A spokesman for Wiltshire Police said: "We're not aware of any other three-legged dogs working for the police across the country.

"He's a great asset, although a little unusual looking now."
