Flooding risk remains 'very real'
River Ouse, York

The Environment Agency is warning that the South and Midlands regions face a continued threat of flooding with further rain expected over the next few days.

Seventeen flood warnings are currently in place across the Midlands, and four in the South, which includes Kent, Sussex, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

In the South West, the scene of severe flooding over the weekend, only one area is on flood warning, while 30 areas have been given the all-clear.

There are no severe flood warnings on rivers in England.

Flood defence manager for the southern region, Alison Baptiste, said: "We are not out of the woods yet.

"The risk of flooding remains very real but we have been fortunate over the last few weeks that we have not had a lot of flooding.

"The sooner that a family has warning that flooding is possible the more quickly they can act to protect their valuables, irreplaceable belongings, loved ones and pets."

Engineers from the Environment Agency were called in to pump water away from the A29 at Pulborough in Sussex.

And the Rivers Rother and Arun were giving cause for concern because of the prolonged rainfall.

'Stable' conditions

In the North East just two rivers are on flood warning with none at all recorded for the North West.

In the Anglian region, 22 areas are on flood watch, the lowest level of alert, and just one is officially recorded on flood warning.

Overall, the Environment Agency is reporting that most river levels have peaked and say the condition in the Midlands is "stable".

The weather forecasters say there will be some sunny spells later on Wednesday, but heavy rain is expected overnight.

Currently 94 areas in England are on flood watch, while 27 are on flood warning.
