| Tuesday, 5 February, 2002, 18:17 GMT Friends need to 'keep an eye out' ![]() Daniel's mother says friends must be "one step ahead" The family of a boy who has been missing for five weeks after a fishing trip say friends must look out for each other. Daniel Nolan disappeared on New Year's Day near the River Hamble in Hampshire after parting froma group of friends. On Tuesday, his fifteenth birthday, his parents said children should act as "buddies" to each other. Pauline and Greg Nolan want young friends to look out for each other when they are out in public. Awareness scheme Daniel's family launched the 'Mate Minders' scheme at Southampton Football Club's ground on Tuesday. Pauline Nolan said: "It's an awareness scheme for youngsters so when they get their independence and take control of their own lives, they also keep an eye out for their friends.
"We need to get the message across - go out and live your lives but there are a lot of problems out there and you need to be one step ahead." It is based on a similar idea operating in the US where youngsters act as "buddies" for each other. Police also renewed appeals for any sightings of Daniel by showing clothes similar to those he was wearing on the day he disappeared. But a spokeswoman for Hampshire Police said it was likely the teenager fell into the river and was swept away. The police spokeswoman said: "Daniel's parents are still running a high visibility campaign for information for their son and we completely back that. "From our point of view we are still working on the most distinct probability that he fell into the water and failed to get out again. "We do have an ongoing inquiry but unfortunately there is no evidence to suggest anything else." Freezing conditions Daniel was last seen walking towards a pontoon on the River Hamble, at about 2330 GMT on 1 January. After he failed to return to his home in Hamble, Mr and Mrs Nolan called the police at 0400 GMT on 2 January. In the hours before he disappeared, Daniel had been fishing with friends in freezing conditions, before he decided to go to a shop. When he saw his friends again, they told him they were going home because it was so cold. Daniel told them he would catch up and set off towards the icy pontoon to pick up his fishing tackle. His gloves and fishing tackle were later found on the pontoon at Hamble Marina. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||
