| Sunday, 27 January, 2002, 18:58 GMT Extra time to save Alice pictures ![]() The photos were sold to collectors from the US Efforts to raise enough money to keep a set of rare photographs in the UK have been boosted by the government. The photographs of young Alice Liddell, taken by the children's author Lewis Carroll, were sold for 600,000 to collectors from the US in June last year. The government acted swiftly to help keep the collection in the UK by placing a temporary export ban on the photographs. Now it has been revealed that the ban will remain in place until May - giving campaigners extra time to raise the cash it needs to hold on to the treasures. It is believed that Alice Liddell was the inspiration behind Carroll's Alice in Wonderland.
"What we are taking about is securing for the country, through national museums, some of Carroll's most important work." Cash consortium Mr Roberts said a consortium, including the NMPFT, the National Portrait Gallery, Victoria and Albert Museum and Museum of Oxford, was trying to raise 600,000 needed to buy back the photographs, which would then be displayed at both the NMPFT and the National Portrait Gallery. Mr Robert said: "We have got some donations so far but we still have a long way to go. We've got a deferral till May so that extra few months is extremely helpful." Carroll was inspired to write what became an internationally-renowned classic children's book after meeting Alice and her two sisters on a river expedition in 1862. | See also: Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||
