New rail link unveiled
Anglia Railways train
Four new trains will run on the line
Plans for a direct rail link between Norwich and Cambridge have been unveiled.

The service is due to start in October.

Anglia Railways has also ordered four new two-car Turbostar trains to run on the line.

The 10m deal was announced by the MP for Norwich South and minister without portfolio, Charles Clarke.

Environmental benefits

He said: "It will link two of the most powerful economic growth centres in the region, Norwich and Cambridge, who can mutually benefit by a direct transport link.

"There are already many people who travel between Norwich and Cambridge who now will be able to travel by train.

"If we can reduce traffic on the A11, enable people to go to and from Norwich and Cambridge in comfort, rather than waiting behind the steering wheel, it really will bring big environmental benefits."

The Strategic Rail Authority has given more than 9m towards the running of the service.

Its chairman Richard Bowker said: "This deal will provide new trains for a new service between two major cities in East Anglia.

"It will provide new trains for commuting and leisure travel."

The service will run hourly calling at Wymondham, Attleborough, Thetford and Ely.

Anglia Railways managing director Tim Clarke said: "I am delighted that our plans to operate the long-awaited new direct service linking the vital centres of Norwich and Cambridge are progressing well."

The trains will be built at the Derby plant of the Bombardier Transportation Company.
