"This is an unpleasant but not life-threatening illness where patients suddenly develop nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. "It usually lasts between 24 and 48 hours and is a self-limiting condition. "It is quite a common illness at this time of the year in the community and obviously patients come into hospital when they're ill and it seems to be coming in with patients." None of the affected patients is said to be in a critical condition. Dr Kathy Nye, a consultant microbiologist with the regional public health laboratory which his based at Heartlands, said: "We are already on top of this but people need to remain vigilant.
