Defence minister to review base's future
Boscombe Down's future remains uncertain
Boscombe missed out on a bid for new aircraft
The Defence Minister, Lewis Moonie, has promised to visit a military airfield near Salisbury to discuss concerns about its future.

Boscombe Down missed out on a crucial bid for a new fleet of aircraft and a review of its role is now being carried out.

The government said the results would be published shortly.

The Salisbury MP, Robert Key, has held a meeting with the Defence Minister to tell him of the urgent need for a decision on the future of the Wiltshire base.

Wonderful workforce

"The worst thing would be loss of MoD work, whilst having to bear the cost of the overheads of running an enormous airfield and that is the worst option possible," he said.

"Fortunately the minister has offered to come down and meet the workers and management.

"They are a wonderful workforce with cutting-edge technology - very important for the future of the military."

The base is run by the government-owned company QinetiQ.

Mr Mooney is expected to meet the workforce and managers, as well as examining its future role.

The decision not to base the tanker aircraft fleet at Boscombe Down followed a series of complaints from people living nearby, including the rock star Sting.

Most concerns revolved around the extra noise the planes would create.
