Queen opens home to WI
The Queen and the Queen Mother leaving the Sandringham Estate
The Queen Mother attends the meeting each January
A Women's Institute meeting attended each year by the Queen and Queen Mother is being held at Sandringham House because the village hall is too cold.

Each January they attend the monthly meeting of Sandringham WI in the hall in West Newton on the royal estate in Norfolk.

For the first time the meeting is being held in the ballroom of Sandringham instead of the hall because of the cold.

About 28 members of the WI are expected to attend the afternoon meeting on 23 January.

WI chairman and vice president Yvonne Browne said: "The main reason is the heating in the village hall is totally inadequate.

The Queen

"The last two years have been a nightmare and last year one of the windows did not shut properly.

"We have been really cold by the end of the meeting."

The Sandringham WI was formed in 1919 and the Queen Mother has been its president for almost 50 years.

Mrs Browne said: "The Queen Mother is 101 and we are concerned for her as we are for all our members.

"This is a joint effort between her lady-in-waiting and myself - and the Queen invited us to go to Sandringham House.

"There are other reasons as well which will become more apparent on the day. It is the Queen's Golden Jubilee this year and we do not want to spoil the surprise.

"All I can say is that we haven't got an outside speaker.

"It will be a unique occasion for the WI and a special meeting."
