Solicitors acting for Kasser's family said the boy suffered brain damage after staff at North Manchester General Hospital "ignored" tests that showed he was distressed in the womb.

Although he goes to a mainstream school, Kasser has severe mobility problems, impaired speech and cannot feed or dress himself.

On Tuesday his mother Feredah, of north Manchester, said her son was a "very determined young man".

She said: "The damages awarded will never compensate Kasser for his injuries and their lifelong effect.

"But at least it will help make provision for him in the future."

On Monday Manchester Health Authority settled Kasser's claim for damages for injuries caused by their negligence and agreed to pay him �2.6 million in compensation.

Authority 'tribute'

Solicitor Laura Morgan, said the award was "a lot of money".

However, she said: "This money is to compensate Kasser not only for the actual injury he suffered at birth, but also for the ongoing treatment and support that he will need for the rest of his life.

"This includes special adaptations to his home, future medical treatment, occupational, speech and language therapy costs, potential loss of earnings and a support or care worker."

A spokesman for Manchester Health Authority said: "The authority would like to take this opportunity of paying tribute to Mr and Mrs Ehsan for their devoted care of Kasser.

"Hopefully this money will go some way towards looking after Kasser for the rest of his life."
