| Friday, 11 January, 2002, 17:02 GMT Sad faces greet speeding drivers ![]() Go too fast and you make the sign sad Drivers in Oxfordshire who keep to the speed limits will be rewarded with a smile, with the introduction of a new anti-speeding device. The Speed Indication Display (Sid) is being used for the first time on the county's roads on Friday. The Sid, set up at the side of the road, displays a smiley face to motorists who are within the limits and a sad face to those who are going to fast. It also flashes up the actual speed the cars are going.
Oxfordshire is believed to be the first local authority in the country to use the indicator. Sid is part of a road safety and driver education programme funded by money from speed cameras. Ian Harris, Oxfordshire County Council's principal road safety officer said: "Oxfordshire is the first local authority in the UK to use this new display. "Many motorists who are driving faster than the limit are not doing so deliberately, they just don't realise how fast they are going. "Sid is there to remind them of the speed limit and is a friendly alternative to speed enforcement." Sergeant Ken Antell from Thames Valley Police, said: "These devices will be a valuable contribution to our efforts in reducing the general speed of traffic within the community. "Our partnership approach is to educate as well as enforce speed limits and our ultimate aim is to make our roads a safer place for all." | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||
