| Friday, 11 January, 2002, 15:11 GMT Morecambe sand set to return ![]() The sands are set to return at Morecambe beach The golden beach at Morecambe in Lancashire could return with plans to import thousands of tonnes of sand to restore the coastline. Parts of the beach at the popular resort have become entirely shingle because of coastal erosion. Planners are set to consider proposals to re-landscape the beach with imported sand. Officials hope the proposals will attract more tourists to the area. Coastal defence Gill Haigh, spokeswoman for Lancaster City Council, said the plans are part of an on-going programme, stretching back many years, to tackle erosion caused by the sea. "The beach used to be a sandy beach but over the years the sand has disappeared," she said. "There has been major coastal defence work along this stretch of coast. "Large boulders have been put in to place which make the thrust of the sea less ferocious.
"It's hoped that putting sand back on the beach will make it more attractive to tourists and return the beach to what it was before," she said. A planning application for the proposals has been submitted but the authority is expecting objections from environmentalists. "Morecambe Bay is very well known for its bird life and wildlife so we are expecting that there will have to be a lot of consultation about the impact on that sector," said Ms Haigh | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||
