 | | Tuesday, 8 January, 2002, 09:42 GMT WW II bomb safely detonated  Police put up an exclusion zone around the bomb An unexploded World War II bomb found in a back garden in Surrey has been detonated safely by army bomb experts. About 500 residents had to spend the night away from their homes after part of the village of Lingfield was evacuated on Monday. Army bomb disposal experts spent the night making the device safe before it could be moved to a safe location on Tuesday morning. The 50 kilogram WW II bomb was detonated just before 0900 GMT.
A police spokeswoman said the police cordon was still in place but people were being allowed back to their homes in small groups. Residents were moved out of their homes after the police set up a 300-metre exclusion zone around the house where the bomb was found on Mount Pleasant Road. Three emergency centres were set up at Lingfield racecourse, the football club and a community centre. The emergency services were alerted to the bomb after it was discovered by builders.
