A victim in a double murder at a New Year's Eve party is believed to have died after a bullet passed through a wall before hitting him.

Wayne Mowatt, 29, from south London is thought to be unconnected with a row which led to the shooting at a house party in east London on Tuesday.

Police say 22-year-old DJ Ashley Kenton from Deptford, south-east London, was shot in the neck before the bullet passed into the next room.

The two men died at separate hospitals after the incident in Shore Road, Hackney, at 0930 GMT.

Unclear motive

It is believed there was a row at the end of the party which resulted in shots being fired.

The murders are being investigated by Operation Trident, which deals with gun crime in the black community.

Detective Chief Inspector Julian Headon, who is leading the investigation, said he is keeping an open mind to the motive for the shooting.

"The first victim, who is thought to be the DJ, was shot in the neck following an altercation.

"We believe the bullet then passed through a partition wall and appears to have struck the second victim causing the injuries from which he died.

Many witnesses

"It would appear at this stage the second victim was unconnected to the original altercation."

Police believe more than 40 people were at the party at the time of the shooting.

Mr Headon said: "All the indications so far are that this was an organised affair attended by a wide range of people.

"We would like to speak to anyone who may have information."
