Cruise company Cunard has placed an order for a new 85,000-tonne liner which will operate from its Southampton base.

The vessel, which is being built in Italy, will be delivered to Cunard in January 2005.

She is costing about 285m and will boast enough cabin space for almost 2,000 passengers.

Pamela Conover, Cunard's president, said: "We are thoroughly committed to expanding our presence in the UK.

There simply isn't anywhere in Britain which can build these ships anymore

Cunard spokesman
"The announcement of this exciting new building project confirms Cunard's determination to maintain our position as the choice British brand."

There will be varying accommodation on-board with most of her staterooms enjoying ocean-facing views and suites having private balconies.

The vessel, which has not been named yet, also has a covered promenade deck.

It is being built for Cunard by Italian shipyard Fincantieri.

A spokesman for Cunard told BBC News Online why the ship was not being built in the UK.

He said: "There simply isn't anywhere in Britain which can build these ships anymore.

"Unfortunately the British ship building industry has not kept up with other European countries."

Cunard already operates the QE2 and the Caronia, which is being repositioned so its homeport will also be Southampton from May 2002.

A 2,620-passenger vessel, the Queen Mary 2, is being built in France and is scheduled to be in the UK port in December 2003.

Ms Conover said: "This is great news for the UK travel agents who have long supported Cunard and are anxiously anticipating another grand Cunarder.

"This new liner will also satisfy the demand of our loyal past passengers for a greater choice of itineraries departing from Southampton."
