Low-cost airline opens new base
A Go aircraft in flight
Go will carry 500,000 people a year from the midlands
The low-cost airline Go is expanding its operations by adding a third base in the UK at East Midlands Airport.

Go will move to the airport at Castle Donington in Leicestershire at the end of May 2002.

It expects to carry more than 500,000 passengers in the first 12 months of operation.

Details of the exact destinations that Go will serve from its new base will be confirmed in mid-January.

The destinations are expected to be selected from the Go's European network with fare levels similar to those from London.

Big step

Go, formerly owned by British Airways, already operates from Stansted airport in Essex and from Bristol airport.

Destinations include European cities such as Rome, Venice, Lisbon, Prague and Barcelona.

"This is a significant step in Go's growth and our arrival in the Midlands will change the face of air travel in the region," said Go chief executive Barbara Cassani.

The East Midlands is Go's third UK base

East Midlands Airport chairman Brian Harrison said Go's arrival in the Midlands was "fantastic news".

Go is one of several budget airlines in the UK, including Easyjet and Ryanair, which have managed to ride out the economic slowdown, and prosper in the aftermath of the attacks on the US in September.

One of the key strategies of the low-cost airlines is to use secondary airports with much lower charges, as well as less congestion, which minimises the chances of delay.

Go began services from Stansted in May 1998 and in Bristol in May 2001.
