 | | Thursday, 13 December, 2001, 09:07 GMT Drugs raid on airport  Some parcels of cocaine were found on the aircraft Police seized cocaine with a street value of more than �250,000 and arrested 27 people in an initiative to tackle drug-related gun crime. Detectives from the Metropolitan Police's Operation Trident and HM Customs and Excise met a flight from Jamaica, which landed at Gatwick airport on Wednesday morning. Sixteen people from the plane were arrested on suspicion of swallowing cocaine packages and are in custody being interviewed by customs officers. A Scotland Yard spokesman said the aircraft was searched and a number of parcels of cocaine were discovered.
Another person was arrested by customs officers on suspicion of concealment of cannabis and a further three were detained in Kingston, Jamaica, by local police as part of the operation. The spokesman said: "These arrests form part of the ongoing joint initiative by Operation Trident and its partners to tackle drugs importation, which fuels gun-related violence in London."
