Woman boxer may sue
Boxing ring
Miss Hudson's brother refused to box in protest
Cambridge University's first female boxer has said she may sue after her latest bout was cancelled by a doctor.

A doctor from the Amateur Boxing Association (ABA) put a stop to the planned fight between Jess Hudson and Tamasin Mallia.

Miss Hudson, 23, claims the doctor told her he did not approve of women's boxing.

She said after the cancellation: "I want to take legal action."

'Outrageous' decision

The doctor's decision was taken minutes before the pair were due to enter the ring in the headline bout at Castle Hall, Hertford.

Miss Hudson said: "I am disgusted and disappointed. It's outrageous.

"We are in an age now where it doesn't matter whether you are male or female.

Miss Hudson, who is studying a PhD at the university said the doctor did agree to weigh them and then said the difference between the two was too wide.

She claims they were within ABA rules.

Family protest

"He told us he wouldn't let the fight go ahead because he didn't agree with women boxing."

Miss Hudson's brother, Ben Hudson, the Eastern Counties and Home Counties welterweight champion refused to fight his bout and left in disgust in protest.

Her trainer Mick Taylor said: "I really, really felt for Jess. Both girls had trained and were geared up for it."

A spokesman for the ABA said he could not comment.

The bout, which should have taken place on Monday, has been rescheduled for 24 January at the Cambridgeshire Police gym in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire.
