Makeover for Selfridges
The new restaurant at the hotel
The restaurant will have panoramic views of London
Visitors to Selfridges in London will be able to gaze on a stunning panorama of the city under plans for a 300m revamp of the store.

The site will also boast a new five-star hotel and restaurant as well as more shopping space if the plans are approved by Westminster City Council.

Selfridges believes the scheme will help the store make the most of space on the northern end of the Oxford Street site.

Vittorio Radice, chief executive of Selfridges, said: "With this development we want to do for Oxford Street what Gordon Selfridge did in 1909 to make a major difference.

Plans for the development at Selfridges
Part of the new structure will be 12 storeys high
"Selfridges has long been the prime reason for visiting Oxford Street and, in recent years, we have re-established a reputation for retail innovation.

"These plans will keep Selfridges ahead of the competition and reinforce Oxford Street as the premier shopping location in Europe.

"The unique mix of the retail store, leisure and office space provides a facility for all who live in or visit London."

Planning decision

The company says there is strong demand for the further expansion of existing areas, such as in the food hall and sports.

The new structure will be 12-storeys high with spaces framed by wings in white glass on the east and west sides of the building.

Discussions have taken place with officials and councillors to arrive at the plans.

Subject to the normal process, a planning decision could be obtained some time after the middle of 2002.
