'Winter wonderland' record attempt
Woolworths grotto in Kidderminster
Around 500 people visit the grotto each day
A store in the Midlands is hoping to enter the record books for the second year running with its giant grotto.

The grotto at Woolworth's Kidderminster store was named as the biggest in the world in the Guinness Book of World Records last year.

It measured an impressive 14,000 cubic feet.

However this year, the grotto has been expanded even further and Woolworth's is now hoping to break its original record.

Themed areas

Records officials from Guinness are due at the store later this week to take the all-important measurements.

Store manager Dave Williams told BBC News Online: "When I came to the store two years ago a small room had been put aside for children to see Santa.

"We had a complete spare floor upstairs which was not in use and I thought we could make something of it.

"When we started we didn't aim for the Guinness Book of Records but once we started building it, we just kept adding to it and adding to it."

This year the special features of the grotto - which can receive up to 500 visitors a day - are winter wonderland and Harry Potter themed areas.

Mr Williams said: "Some people have found it very emotional when they are in there. There's a lot of animation plus snow scenes and music."

Planning for the grotto begins each April and building work begins three months before Christmas with help from local companies.

All the money raised at the grotto goes to the charity Kids First as well as to some local charities.
