Uniform decision delayed
Pupils a protest against uniforms in October
Pupils say uniforms will stifle individuality
A decision on whether students at a Warwickshire school will be forced to wear uniforms for the first time in 25 years has been put off until the spring.

Students at the Trinity Catholic Technology College in Royal Leamington Spa have protested against the plan.

They say it will destroy the school's relaxed style and ethos of individualism.

A decision was expected to be made at a private meeting of school governors on Monday night.

'Inappropriate dress'

But it was deferred until the spring to allow the governing body to discuss with pupils, staff and parents details of the dress code.

The governors originally approved the uniform and planned to introduce it from September next year.

In a statement, the school said: "From the annual general meeting with parents, it was clear both the governors and the parents are highly committed to the school and its ethos.

"Furthermore, the parents at the meeting shared and supported the governor's view inappropriate school dress should be challenged."

The statement added: "We have agreed to embark on a comprehensive programme of discussion with pupils, staff and parents about the detail of a code of dress for Trinity School.

"The governors will then consider the outcome of these consultations in the early spring term for a decision."

Opposed change

Dozens of teenagers at the school missed their first lesson on 9 October to protest against the move.

One of the protestors, pupil Aya Collins, said at the time: "The whole ethos of the school is to individualism and it feels like they are taking that away by making us wear a uniform."

In May last year, a survey of parents, pupils, and staff opposed a change to a uniform.

But in early October a letter was sent to parents saying the uniform was being introduced.

The head teacher, Catherine Fields, said a lot of the clothes that pupils wore were not suitable for school.
