Rolls-Royce workers await fate
Rolls Royce's Derby plant
The Derby plant is expecting 1,900 job cuts
Workers at Rolls-Royce in Derby are waiting to find out if their jobs will among a wave of expected redundancies in the company.

Rolls Royce is expected to release a statement on the job losses it will make in Britain on Thursday.

Five weeks ago, the company announced it was cutting 5,000 jobs following the terror attacks in the United States and the subsequent crisis in the airline sector.

About 1,900 jobs are expected to be lost at the company's aero-engine factories in Derby.

Rolls Royce plants in Bristol, and East Kilbride and Hillington in Scotland are also thought to be at risk of job losses.

Workers wait to hear their fate

Since the initial announcement, management, unions, politicians and the government have been meeting in an attempt to reduce the projected losses and provide help and training for workers.

Rolls-Royce would not comment on the matter except to confirm that a statement will be issued on the job cuts before the end of the week.

Derby North MP Bob Laxton said: "I would guess they will announce these figures and then throw open some redundancy arrangements to say to people 'who wants to go, perhaps on a voluntary basis?'

"Then they can see if the requests for voluntary redundancy match the numbers on each site that they're looking to lose and then see where they go from there."
