Park status plans for the South Downs
South Downs
The South Downs extend over 116 kilometres
A major public consultation has begun on the creation of a South Downs National Park.

The government proposal is designed to protect the area, which extends over 116km from Winchester to Eastbourne.

Attempts have been made to obtain national protection and status for the area for more than 100 years.

Now people have three months to comment on the Countryside Agency's proposals.

Improve landscape

Some councils, such as Lewes, are opposed to the idea as they fear it will boost visitor numbers causing traffic gridlock.

Landowners are also concerned about the scope of the park, which could result in tighter planning controls.

The South Downs is already an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) cared for by the Sussex Downs Conservation Board and the East Hampshire Joint Advisory Committee.

But the Countryside Agency feels the area would benefit from national park status and authority, which would bring with it greater powers to tackle the long-term challenges facing the Downs.

Supporters say park status would also give the area a permanent authority committed to conserving and improving the landscape with more resources.

A number of roadshows are being held during the consultation period.

After the three months the Countryside Agency will prepare a proposed boundary for a South Downs National Park and its recommendations for the government on setting up an authority.

A decision is not expected for another five years.
